After being torn-down six years ago due to deteriorating structural conditions, the 6th Street Bridge (viaduct) finally re-opened to motor traffic on Sunday, July 10th, 2022. Replacing the famed Los Angeles landmark, the new bridge (named “Ribbon of Light” due to its undulating arches which are outfitted with LED lights for night-time illumination) cost a whopping $588 million in order to reconnect downtown Los Angeles with bordering east-side neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, but nobody seemed to mind the cost during the 3-day weekend celebration commemorating its grand reopening. The festivities saw countless pedestrians and cyclists (utilizing the accompanying foot and bike paths) taking in all the great views of DTLA while vintage cars and lowriders took the opportunity to cruise the new roadway in style. I’m sure many will miss the old 6th Street Bridge, but this new iteration is certainly a worthy successor that I’m sure will become just as iconic, if not already!
