Billed as an immersive light and sound experience that inspires expanded states of awareness and connection, Chromasonic utilizes technology called “re-frequencing” that converts sound waves into light frequencies and vice-versa in order to make light audible and sound visible. The brainchild of artists; Johannes Girardoni, Orpheo McCord, and Joel Shearer, the trio endeavors to blur the boundaries of art and science to manipulate the viewer’s perception of time, space, and reality.
Amongst other installations, the trio established a permanent venue in Venice, CA (named - Satellite One), which is where our session occurred. Projected against a unique curvilinear chamber by a central column of light tubes, you are engulfed into a psychedelic bath of light and sound. Words cannot fully convey this unique sensation, but it literally felt like being swallowed by a rainbow as the colors and harmonics pulsated around me. At the risk of sounding too “hippie-dippie”, there were times when the room seemed to reach out into infinity, which I’m sure was just a depth-perception thing… I think. At strategic intervals, the light and audio tones can get fairly intense (hence the need of a waiver) amid smoother waves of calm. So, at least for me, I alternated between states of alertness and relaxation while others in the room fell asleep completely… as evident by their snoring. So there really is no wrong way to enjoy your thirty minutes. In the end, no matter what stock you put into Chromasonic’s mission statement, the experience truly is one of a kind.
