If the Las Vegas Sphere and Meta’s Quest had a baby, the COSM shared reality experience would be the apple of their virtual eyes. Self-anointed as a one-of-a-kind medium that will redefine how we consume entertainment, art, and sports in a fashion that has never been experienced before, I’m skeptical of anything that boasts such immense hyperbole because the final product never seems to match those lofty expectations. But after watching all the various posts on social media showcasing COSM in all its grandeur, I decided to give it a shot. And at least with my particular screening, I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint.

Located in the newly remodeled Hollywood Park District, bookended by Sofi Stadium and the Intuit Dome, COSM opened its doors to the public in June of 2024. The screening space features state-of-the-art LED technology with a whopping 12K resolution and spans 87ft across its domed walls. Seating occurs on three levels and accommodates up to 1700 people. In my opinion, the best seats are located on the third level. This is where you get the most encompassing view of the screen. The bottom level, meant more for socializing as evidenced by its in-room bar, will have some obstructed views of the top portions unless you stand right in front of the screen. Prices vary, dependent on screening event and seat choice which range from single high-top chairs to smaller double seats and large party booths.

I attended a screening of Orbital; a 30 minute presentation depicting the history of the universe and the precious significance of life here on earth as it pertains to the cosmos, all narrated by astronauts who understand best what that relationship means. The screening was stunning thanks to a projection system that makes IMAX look like an old B&W television set, and I’m not afraid to admit that I got a little emotional as I was enveloped by the interstellar imagery around me. At one point, it literally felt like I was on the ISS viewing earth from outer space as the planet spun its way across the screen. While my GA ticket for a 30 minute screening was a little pricey at $22, it was worth every penny for what I had just witnessed.

At the conclusion of Orbital, we got a sneak peak of future events that will be screening at COSM, highlighted by its sports schedule featuring MMA, soccer, college football, and NBA games. If those short clips and Orbital are any indication of what that immersive experience will be like, watching it at COSM just might be better than attending the game itself!
