With the Pacific Ocean just blocks away, a fleeting glance at these two boat-like structures would hardly strike you as out of place until you realize that they are quite literally houses built to look like boats! Dubbed the SS Encinitas and SS Moonlight, these two “boat houses” stand 15 feet tall by 20 feet long and have a floor space of 1,100 square feet which is larger than your standard-sized apartment and are a classic example of novelty or programmatic architecture popularized in that era in which buildings were given unusual shapes without any intention of being authentic. The brainchild of architect Miles Kellogg who used salvaged timber from two local businesses to erect these unique residences all the way back in the 1920s, (from the Moonlight Beach Dance Parlor and the Encinitas Hotel, hence their names) the Encinitas Boat Houses are still rented as private dwellings to this very day!
