The work of Turkish-born/LA-based artist; Refik Anadol, exists at the nexus of art and technology. Sourcing countless data points into a proprietary algorithm that generates a digital fugue state, it feels like you’ve been sucked into the dream of some artificial intelligence… an assessment that isn’t too far from the truth.
Living Paintings, on display at the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, is Anadol’s first major solo exhibition in Los Angeles. His current collection showcases California-specific data and imagery to explore his continued fascination with natural environments and their technological interpretation, creating a fluid-like representation that seems alive, or the best screensaver you’ve ever seen.
The exhibition features about a dozen of Anadol’s work, including a digital Infinity Room and a massive 40ft LED screen which loops a piece entitled Pacific Dreams. This last one is worth the visit alone and I promise that you’ll find yourself lingering in its presence, captivated by the imagery.
