It’s rather fitting that the Second Home Serpentine Pavilion shares its Los Angeles home with the La Brea Tar Pits (a natural history museum based around the only active urban Ice Age excavation site in the world) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) because it looks like a gigantic primordial creature that’s just slithered itself across a painter’s palette. In truth, it’s the latest creation by Spanish architectural firm SelgasCano (Jose Selgas & Lucia Cano) which represents their continuing mission to connect design with nature. Part interactive art installation / part multipurpose social space, the Serpentine Pavilion gives visitors a slight respite from the heat as they venture through its kaleidoscope of colors. Additionally, it will offer a broad schedule of cultural programming that includes live music, film screenings, performance art, and various discussion panels throughout its run (calendar of events can be found on their website provide below under “resources”).

Later this year (September of 2019) Second Home, a London-based social business committed to supporting entrepreneurship and creativity in cities around the world, will again tap SelgasCano to build its first U.S. workspace in East Hollywood; a 90,000-square-foot urban campus that will incorporate over 6,500 trees & plants in its design. It’s an ambitious plan to reinvigorate that particular area and community, but if the Serpentine Pavilion is any indication of their bold vision, I think Second Home and SelgasCano are certainly up to the task.
