I’m forever captivated by the numerous rock formations and sea stacks that populate the California coastline. But without a doubt, there’s one particular monolith that captures my sense of imagination (and dread) the most, and that’s Shark Fin Cove located outside of Davenport, CA . Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, this aptly named force of nature (it’s also referred to as Shark Tooth Beach) rises out of the ocean like a gigantic Megalodon on steroids hunting for its next meal. I’m fairly certain that your head will be filled with visions of your favorite shark movie (for me, it was equal portions of The Meg and Deep Blue Sea) as you admire the view from the cliffs above before mustering the courage to go down and explore a little closer.

Access to Shark Fin Cove begins at the unmarked parking turnout on the west side of Highway 1, less than a mile south of Davenport. After you park, you’ll cross over a set of railroad tracks on your right to reach the trailhead. Before you head down, you should roam the cliffs to the north which serve as a natural observation point. This birds-eye perspective will definitely set the mood for the rest of your visit. Once you’re ready, it’s time to head down to the cove! The trail is short but steep, so make sure to watch your footing as you proceed. Once you reach the bottom, you’ll be greeted by a secluded beach that seems leftover from prehistoric times. It’s the sort of setting that would hardly surprise you if a sea monster were to bob on the waters off in the distance. It’s probably just a seal, but you never know. As if this location needed anything more to complete the ambiance, you’ll find a sea cave to your left which you can enter during low tide. If you like secret coves, awe-inspiring rock formations, and aren’t completely petrified by the thought of sharks, this spot is a worthy addition to any itinerary.
