Even though my golfing skills are more Happy Gilmore than they are Tiger Woods, I’m always up for a new experience. So when I learned that Stadiumlinks was coming to Los Angeles at Angels Stadium, I immediately signed-up for a tee time. Stadiumlinks offers the unique opportunity to play a 9-hole round of golf at various professional sporting stadiums across the country. A mixture of Topgolf and extreme sports, each hole is set up at different spots and elevations throughout the park. No putting is involved however, it’s basically a glorified driving range, but oh how glorious it is. There’s definitely something surreal about teeing-off from the upper deck in right field with no one else in the stadium but you and your fellow golfers, much less watching yourself on the big screen scoreboard as you slice a shot into the parking lot (I will not confirm or deny if this happened).
You keep your own scorecard as you would on any golf course. Each hole is a par-3 and ranges anywhere from 50 to 170 (adjusted) yards in length. Scoring is as followed: you get an eagle for a hole in one (haaaaaa), a birdie for landing within the target circle on each green, a par for landing anywhere on the green outside the circle, a bogie for missing the green, and a double-bogie for missing the playing field all together. I’ll leave you to guess which one of those scores I accumulated the most (yeah, it’s the one you were thinking). You get an allotment of 18 balls for your round which allows for two shots per hole, but its really up to your own discretion how you manage your ball allotment. (Isn’t it always?)
Just like in real golf, as terrible as you may have preformed, all it takes is one good shot to make the whole experience worthwhile. And I’m happy to report that even a duffer such as myself managed several (very lucky) shots. While the PGA Tour may never be in the stars for me, I’m definitely up for another round of Stadiumlinks whenever it returns to the area.
