Growing up, I was definitely more of a Star Trek kid than a Star Wars fan. Nerd alert ahead, but the science of Star Trek always fascinated me over the fantasy of the other series. Also, I think without ever consciously realizing it until years later, I was drawn to the diversity of the cast as an Asian-American who rarely saw anyone who looked like me on TV. That’s why I was super excited to learn that the Skirball Cultural Center would be opening a Star Trek exhibit thru the winter of 2022.
After a long delayed opening due to Covid, “Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds” finally opened in October. It isn’t a huge exhibit (it shouldn’t take more than 90 minutes of your time), but it contains a wonderful collection of memorabilia, props, costumes, trivia, facts & figures from the original TV series and subsequent spinoffs and films. What I really appreciated was how the exhibit interwove the franchise’s cultural significance and how influential it was in the realms of racial equality and actual science! It’s amazing to think that Captain Kirk first appeared more than fifty years ago and that the franchise is still as strong as ever. I hope it will always continue to live long and prosper!
