Located within Magic Box; an event space in DTLA, The Lume Los Angeles (newly opened in 2022) is a cutting-edge digital art gallery that aims to provide its guests with a fully immersive visual and auditory experience. Its inaugural exhibit - Street Art Alive; is an expansive curation of over 200 artists that chronicles the rise and cultural significance of this urban art form across the globe.

Using high tech projectors upon the surfaces of its interior, creating a moving kaleidoscope inundating the senses, Street Art Alive joins the ranks of similar exhibitions like Immersive Van Gogh and Monet: The Immersive Experience. To be honest, your mileage may vary now that the luster of this particular format has started to wain, but the small twist that differentiates itself from the others is the fact that Street Art Alive has documentary-like elements as well. Using major hubs like New York, London, Sao Paulo, Melbourne and Berlin (a small section is devoted to Los Angeles), the 40 minute loop also provides viewers with a historical retrospective as it intercuts actual video and artist quotes along with the presentation. And at least for me, there’s something more appropriate about street art co-existing in this digital setting as opposed to this format being utilized with “classic art” like Van Gogh or Monet which may contribute to the disconnect for some. Overall, I think this will be an enjoyable experience for anyone who is a fan of street art. My only recommendation is to try to go during the week when the price of admission is $10 cheaper.
