Visiting the Wayfarers Chapel almost feels like stepping into a fairy tale. This is exactly where Hans Christian Andersen would have the valiant prince marry his beloved damsel, after rescuing her from the clutches of an evil sorcerer, before living happily ever after. Except we never see what happens afterwards, now do we? We never see the arguments over finances and weight gain. We never see the prince drink too much at family picnics or the damsel’s growing addiction to online shopping. And we never see the constant flow of tears while at marriage counseling. That’s because we all know that fairy tales don’t exist in real life. But thankfully for us, the Wayfarers Chapel most certainly does.

This magnificent chapel of glass sits upon the picturesque cliffs of Palos Verdes which only augments its appeal. It stands before you in plain sight, but like any grand illusion, you’re not quite sure if it’s even there at all as it camouflages itself amongst the trees until you’re ready to draw closer. Its spell fully induced, you’ll enter inside as your mouth drops in awe at the scene that surrounds you. Something will compel you to take a seat in one of the pews as you continue to take it all in, wondering exactly where the glass ends and the sky begins. And if you’re lucky, you just might have the whole place to yourself which isn’t totally unheard of if you can swing by on a weekday. When granted those moments of solitude, you’ll swear that there must be a little magic in the air here and that if a place like this is possible, maybe fairy tales do exist after all.
