The holiday season also means that it’s light display season around Los Angeles with various institutions like the LA Zoo, Descanso Gardens, and LA Arboretum each hosting their very own illuminated extravaganzas throughout the winter months.
The newest of these nighttime visual experiences is Astra Lumina, currently on display at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes. Unlike its predecessors, Astra Lumina does not have a holiday theme. Instead, these art pieces (presented by Canadian entertainment company; Moment Factory) represent the 17th installation of Moment Factory’s world-wide Lumina Enchanted Night Walk series and the first one to make an appearance on the West Coast. Their mission statement? “With the stars descending from the night sky, set off across mysterious grounds to discover a celestial pathway of lustrous light, cosmic visions, and astral song. Immerse yourself in illuminating encounters of lighting, projection and sound, and connect with the stars before they return to the sky above.”
While this may sound a little too mystical and grandiose for some, the visuals are absolutely stunning and will keep you in awe as you saunter around the mile-long path which features 9 distinct exhibits. And for what it’s worth, you will sort of feel like you’ve been transported to another world during your time there with its unique juxtaposition of technology and nature. Astra Lumina is a worthy addition to the LA light show scene and is definitely worth a visit during its limited winter engagement.
