Like every great BBQ, you will definitely leave smelling of smoke thanks to the proximity of the grills.
Already a diamond in the rough for those in the know ever since it was established in 2013, Dollar Hits recently became a mainstream sensation after being featured in the Los Angeles episode of Netflix’s Street Food series. Located in the enclave of Historic Filipino Town (affectionally referred to as HiFi) which contains the largest population of Filipinos in the United States, you know the food needs to be legit to survive in this neighborhood and Dollar Hits rises to that challenge in spades.
Serving authentic Filipino dishes (cafeteria-style) during the day, the real magic at Dollar Hits begins at 4:30PM. That’s when the barbecues fire up, creating an experience that is like none other in Los Angeles, although you’ll swear you’re eating street food in Manila all the while. You begin inside selecting your skewers. Be forewarned however, since the majority of choices are not for the faint of heart. Sure, you’ll find tamer options like pork, chicken and sausage skewers, but the menu is dominated by body parts that some would call “offal”… items like Isaw (beef intestines), Betamax (congealed pork blood), Adidas (chicken feet), and Pwet ng Manok (chicken butt) just to name a few. When in Rome, right?!
Then it’s time to head outside with your bounty and start grilling on one of several slim grills set up in the parking lot. Full disclosure, all the skewers are already cooked so there’s no worry about contamination or food poisoning, but the grill allows you to achieve the perfect amount of crispiness, and should you have any concern about getting the right level of char, there are workers outside to assist.
Dollar Hits offers a few other selections to augment your skewers with (should you wimp out on some of the gnarlier bits) like veggie egg rolls, Ukoy (a vegetable fritter), Turon (deep fried banana rolls for dessert) and Samalamig (juices made with various fruits and vegetables). So if you’re new to Filipino food, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Dollar Hits. One way or another, it’ll provide a dining experience that you will never forget!
