Fallen Star isn’t the shoddy work of some crack architect, it’s actually an art installation by Korean artist; Do Ho Suh. Located on the campus of UCSD, Fallen Star appears to be perilously teetering off the edge of the Jacobs School of Engineering, but rest assured that this architectural and art masterpiece is 100% stable. Or so they say. Installed in 2012, the life-sized cottage which weighs 70,000 pounds is Suh’s exploration of home, cultural displacement, one’s perception of space and how one builds a memory of it. “What is home, after all? A place? An idea? A sentiment? A memory?” In addition to the sky-blue cottage, Fallen Star is fully furnished, with a fireplace, art, a TV, and many of Suh’s own family photographs. Fallen Star has a front yard garden as well. And if you dare, you can visit the house on certain days to experience the awe-inspiring, possibly vertigo-inducing, views from within.
