The creation of Edna and Alex Harper, this immaculate topiary garden located in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego would make Edward Scissorhands green with envy. Situated on the embankment of their home, the garden is over 15 years in the making and constantly evolving thanks to the Harper’s latest round of inspiration and great consternation of their gardener. On the day I visited, the gardener informed me that he spends over five hours a day devoted solely to the topiary’s upkeep. But the stunning site is definitely worth it! With over 50 unique figures representing various animals, landmarks (yes, that’s an Egyptian Pyramid you saw), and people they’ve encountered throughout their travels, Harper’s Topiary Garden seems almost alive and certainly makes for an interesting stop the next time you find yourself in San Diego.
