At least Netflix’s Emily in Paris gave us one good thing; alerting the world to the existence of the grand audio-visual spectacular that is Immersive Van Gogh. I kid, I kid, I’m sure Emily in Paris is fantastic (cough, cough). Also of note, there are as many as five different companies taking advantage of this 360 degree projection technology to display Van Gogh’s work in various cities around the world (with other featured artists soon on the way like Gustav Klimt & Claude Monet). So “Van Gogh Alive” is not the same exhibition as “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience”, which sounds a lot like “Immersive Van Gogh” currently running here in Los Angeles. While there may be subtle differences between these various shows, they’re ultimately all variations of the same concept. Is that clear yet? lol.
Immersive Van Gogh is located in the former Sunset Boulevard location of Amoeba Records, re-imagining the cavernous interior with 148 million pixels projected against 500,000 cubic feet of projection space via 64 projectors. Presented by US company; Lighthouse Immersive and created by the same team behind “Atelier des Lumieres” which is the show that was actually featured in Emily in Paris, the LA exhibit is definitely in good hands. Split up into two main viewing galleries (with a viewing-balcony situated in the larger gallery), you are literally swallowed up by the constantly evolving projections that fill every nook and cranny of the former record store with iconic paintings like; Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and of course, Starry Night. Along with the accompanying music, the visuals are as haunting as they are hypnotic and will completely obliterate your senses in the very best way. The artwork loops twice during your hour-long session, so feel free to roam about and enjoy the exhibition from different vantage points which will almost feel like you’re watching a completely different show as you change positions. I definitely suggest that you Van-Gogh to this exhibit while it’s in town!
