Located just outside of Chicago, The Morton Arboretum (founded in 1922 by Joy Morton) provides a 1,700 acre sanctuary to one of this planet’s most vital and under-appreciated resources: trees. This focus is what separates an arboretum from a botanical garden (which features a wider variety of trees, plants & flowers) and the Morton Arboretum does so with great panache. In addition to its splendid collection of 4,650 plants from around the world along with 16 miles of hiking trails, the Morton Arboretum rotates a splendid collection of artwork throughout the grounds that blends and accentuates the surrounding environment.
The current exhibit - Human+Nature - features five stunning sculptures by Daniel Popper. Each sculpture is strategically positioned which allows you to enjoy the arboretum as a whole as you traverse from one sculpture to the next. Standing as tall as 26ft high, each sculpture symbolizes the maternal nature of mother-earth in the hopes that we will better connect with and value the land that we inhabit. The sight of these monoliths rising up before you will have your mouth agape in awe, accomplishing its objective with aplomb. The exhibit is set to run through 2021, if not longer.
