Heard about these crystal-shaped candies on social media made by a company called Silky Gem on the East Coast which piqued my curiosity and sweet-tooth so I decided to give them a try. Founded by Gia Huynh, these almost too-beautiful-to-eat candies are based after a traditional Vietnamese Lunar New Year’s treat called “Mứt Rau Câu” and it’s meant to bring joy and luck to anyone who eats them.

Made from dried agar and stylized after the Japanese “Kohankutou” version of this Asian delicacy, giving it its vibrant jewel-like appearance, Silky Gem candies are the epitome of a visual treat… and the price tag reflects this. Prices vary, but my “Pieces of Bling” sample box of 9 individually wrapped candies cost $40 (before tax and shipping) meaning that each one is just under $5. But the concept is pretty unique and it makes for a memorable gift idea for any occasion.

Inspired mainly after fruit flavors (pineapple, lychee, raspberry, etc), the exterior has a hardshell consistency similar to rock candy, giving it its crystal-like appearance. The interior texture falls somewhere in-between mochi and jello. Also like mochi is its subtle flavor, which I enjoyed, so it doesn’t overpower you with sugar overkill. While I’m not sure how many times I would purchase again due to the expense, I’m glad I tried it and would recommend to anyone who’s interested.
